Locally you can explore the many small towns and villages in the area as well as the rolling farmlands of Strathmore and the dramatic mountain scenery of Glenshee and Strathardle.
Within East Perthshire, Blairgowrie & Rattray spreads out from the garden area of the Wellmeadow and has a good selection of quality independent shops. Several walks radiate out from the Wellmeadow including along the riverside up to the falls at Cargill’s Leap.
Nearby Alyth is a picturesque farming town dating back over 1,500 years, the centre of Alyth is particularly attractive with a stream running between the main streets criss-crossed by little footbridges, the oldest of which was built around 1500. To the west of the town the picturesque Den of Alyth – a woodland glen with riverside walks offers the opportunity to spot a wide variety of wildlife.
The dramatic mountain scenery of Glenshee is accessed by the A93 – The Royal Road – which links East Perthshire to Royal Deeside. Glenshee is a great centre for walking, mountain biking, fishing and shooting and the area is rich in wildlife. You can expect to see wild red deer, golden eagles, grouse and much more.
Strathardle is a lush highland glen which starts at Bridge of Cally and runs west into lonely Glen Brerachan before reaching Pitlochry.
Coupar Angus was once one of the most important religious centres in Scotland, today much of the town centre is a conservation area and many of the fine buildings have been restored through a local heritage initiative. Meigle is a small village to the east of Coupar Angus and is best known for the collection of 26 sculpted Pictish stones that is housed in the Meigle Museum.
