The Cateran Trail
The Cateran Trail was the first circular route in the UK.
Fully waymarked, it is 64 mls/ 103 km long and you can walk it in one go - over four or five days - or in stages.
The Cateran Trail was the first long distance trail in Scotland and is now one of Scotland’s Great Trails. It is 64 miles / 103 kms long and it is recommended that the walker takes 5 days to complete the Trail in order to see what East Perthshire and part of Angus has to offer. It is of course possible to walk it in fewer days. There are companies who do baggage transfer or if you would like to stay in one location, human transportation.
More detailed information on the Trail including route maps can be had here. Details of accommodation can be had on the BEPTA web-site visiteastperthshire.com as well as other attractions and “What’s On”.
Stage 1 – Blairgowrie to Kirkmichael – 15 mls / 24.5 kms
Stage 2 – Kirkmichael to Spittal of Glenshee – 8 mls / 13 kms

Stage 4 – Kirkton of Glenisla to Alyth – 11 mls / 17.5 kms
Leaving the hamlet of Kirkton of Glenisla you will cross the River Isla by a lovely bridge and then climb the hill before heading towards Alyth.”
Stage 5 – Alyth to Blairgowrie – 16 mls / 26 kms
The last day starts with a climb up to the top of Alyth Hill before dropping down to Bamff Estate. As you walk through the estate, you will see evidence of beaver activity. You then take to a quiet minor road for a few miles before taking to paths and dropping down into Bridge of Cally. From here back to Blairgowrie, you do the reverse of your first day. For an alternative ending, take the route through the Den of Alyth and then Drimmie Woods and then down to Blairgowrie. This route is sign-posted “East Perthshire Path Network” and is only 7 mls.
