"East Perthshire's rivers offer some of the finest Salmon fishing in the UK" R Smith, Glenshee
The River Tay and its tributaries, the Isla and the Ericht, are among the best salmon and trout rivers in Europe. The Tay and its tributaries have the greatest flow of any river in Britain and, as recently as 1989, over 15,000 rod catches of salmon were recorded in one season.
The salmon season runs from January to October and fishing is available from Monday to Saturday. There is no Sunday salmon fishing in Scotland. The rights to fish for salmon are privately owned by numerous owners and permits are required to fish particular stretches or beats.
Brown trout fishing is also excellent with fish of up to five pounds being regularly caught. There are many different trout fishing clubs and associations on the Tay system. Each has its own permit policies, but generally they offer daily, weekly and season tickets.
The legal season for brown trout runs from March to October. Unlike salmon, it is legal to fish on Sundays for brown trout.
Country Sports - New Taster Sessions for Beginners
The Scottish Country Sports Tourism Group has launched new 'Experiences' or taster sessions for anyone interested in trying deer stalking, shooting and fishing.
The half day 'Experiences' are designed to increase the accessibility of country sports and offer the opportunity to learn from experts in a safe and friendly environment. They are suitable for complete beginners and for those with some basic knowledge. Participants can expect to gain a better understanding of Scotland's country sports and how they have shaped the rural landscape. The benefits for habitats and wildlife are also explained, as is safety and country sports etiquette. Each 'Experience' offers an element of practical instruction with an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques with shotgun, rod and rifle. The Deer Stalking and Shooting Experiences offer the chance to try shooting at targets (no live animals are used).
The Country Sports Experiences take place at various venues throughout Perthshire and Angus and are available at a cost of £50 per person. Booking is done directly with the venue. www.countrysportscotland.com
