The Angus Coast

The Angus Coast stretches north east of Dundee and offers a spectacular mix of beaches, cliff and historic towns.

Carnoustie is famous for its Open Championship golf courses while Arbroath gave its name to the smokie - a local delicacy of haddock smoked over burning woodchips. It also gave the world the Declaration of Arbroath, an assertion of Scottish independence signed by King Robert the Bruce in 1320 which is regarded by many to be the most important document in Scottish history.

Continuing north you come to Montrose, with its 2000 acre tidal basin nature reserve that is a regular stopping point for many migratory birds including over 20,000 geese. From here you can loop back inland past the historic House of Dun to Brechin, where the Pictavia Visitor Centre tells the story of Scotland's ancient tribes, before returning via the main A90 road.
